MVLA students celebrate Earth Day with a fashion show
Mount Vernon Leadership Academy students in grades pre-K-5 designed and displayed creative outfits for their Earth Day Fashion Show last Friday. Students created their outfits using mostly recycled materials such as newspapers and boxes to promote environmental consciousness. After preparing for the show in Avery Looney’s art class, students walked out to applause and cheers from their fellow classmates before winners were selected by the judges. Congratulations to all the contestants!
The top three contestants received prizes for their costumes.

Dr. Satish Jagnandan, Director of Assessment, Mathematics and Science, enjoyed himself during a visit to a Mount Vernon Leadership Academy prekindergarten classroom last week. During his visit, Dr. Jagnandan engaged with students as they participated in new hands-on and engaging math strategies.
In celebration of Women’s History Month, MVLA held a Parade of Women on Wednesday afternoon, where students created displays of famous women and all of their accomplishments. Outside of the Mount Vernon Leadership Academy auditorium, classes lined up excitedly, ready to show off their projects on famous women figures in history.
On Wednesday, Youth Detective Lisa Rhodes of the Mount Vernon Police Department visited Anna Zelek’s fourth-grade classroom at Mount Vernon Leadership Academy for Women’s History Month. Students prepared a wonderful display of appreciation for Detective Rhodes, which included a handmade card, fruit baskets, and heartfelt messages read by students in Ms. Zelek’s class.
Mount Vernon Leadership Academy mentors and their student-mentees lined up in the school’s lobby, bubbling with excitement about their field trip to Broadway. On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, students traveled to New York City to see a performance of The Lion King.
Masked singers gave their all on the auditorium stage, singing popular songs and donning creative costumes. On Thursday, February 13, 2025, families and friends filed into the Mount Vernon Leadership Academy auditorium to watch the Masked Eagle singing contest.
Large cases of books and tables of colorful knick-knacks, school supplies, and toys decorated the entryway of the Mount Vernon Leadership Academy for students to choose from. From February 3 to 10, students at MVLA can purchase from the yearly Scholastic Book Fair, which promotes reading and responsible spending amongst young people.
Students in Flavia Garufi’s third-grade class at the Mount Vernon Leadership Academy spent time researching and putting together a brilliant project on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In celebration of Black History Month, Mrs. Garufi’s students watched videos, read books and learned about the teachings and life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
